The beautiful lines of the SEAFIRE TA16 are no accident.....the design is by David B. Thurston. The Seafire is the latest amphibian developed by David B. Thurston, designer of the Colonial SKIMMER (now the Lake BUCCANEER) and TEAL amphibians, the Seafire incorporates the best features of earlier designs and combines over fifty five years of amphibian design and development experience with the latest available technology. As a result, the Seafire Amphibian is very competitive with a landplane of similar power and gross weight. The Seafire power plant includes a single 250 hp Lycoming 0-540 engine, Hartzell constant speed propeller and approximately 90 U.S. gallons of usable fuel. The Seafire is designed for two primary purposes: utility and safety. The Seafire amphibian can land on any river, pond or lake over one-half mile long; on any open, relatively flat field; and of course, at any airport. As a result, the Seafire is ideal for river and shore patrol, carrying passengers and freight, and providing access on a year—round basis to otherwise inaccessible areas. With the addition of a steer able nose wheel on the Seafire better ground control is realized, permitting the installation of snow skis for winter travel. The landing gear retracts hydraulically for water and flight operation, with a hand pump provided for emergency use. Why an Amphibian? The primary reason for the existence of amphibian aircraft may be summed in two words “utility” and “safety”. The amphibian is designed to operate from land bases and available waterways, frequently without any prepared surface, docking or handling facilities. No other aircraft type encompasses such a broad spectrum of utility for the price. The amphibian feature permits water operation from unprepared sites common to developing nations as well as from remote areas of major countries. The safety feature is the second major factor about the amphibian. While in transit, every river, pond, or lake over 1/2 mile long is an emergency landing field, as are the usual open fields or intermediate airports. Fuel capacity for 6-10 hours of cruise operation, coupled with landing versatility, permits the amphibian to fuel at home base, cruise outbound for 3 hours or more, and return home without refueling. In addition, the rugged hull bottom resulting from water load design requirements offers added protection in the event of a forced landing away from water or a suitable field. All of these features combine to offer, a high utility, safe type of airplane for the sportsman pilot. And the airplane can be equipped with skis, a cold weather landing may be made on the ice or snow. Such capability provides year-round entry in all climates to otherwise inaccessible areas.
