Diversity
"This photograph has been with me for 10 years and wanted
for this assignment to portray a story of change. Each part
of the picture reminds me of what Brooklyn is to me and how
I am someone who has taken a bridge to a different part of
life. I thought how I could incorporate more of me into the
picture. I surrounded it with the colors of my flags red,
white and blue of the United States of America and the
Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The symbolism of the colors
ring true in my soul whether it is symbolism according to
the 1895 meeting for the Puerto Rican flag: Red Stripes -
The blood from the brave warriors, White Stripes - Victory
and peace after obtaining independence, Blue Triangle - Our
sky and coastal waters, White Lone Star Our beautiful Island
or the colors of old glory which I proudly serve everyday...
Holding on to this picture for so many years and watching it
change its meaning to me has shown me art can move you to a
place of peace. The bridge with its strength and longevity
is a foundation to travel on. The bottles symbolized are not
the main feature rather the steal cables across them
represent the bondage of alcoholism."
